A Shelter Through The Storm

Storms in our lives may seem to rage, but God can still them and give peace and a great calm.

Eventually the storm will pass entirely and He will bring us safely to the other side.

Each storm will cause us to realize that it is He who is in control and our faith and trust will dispel our fears and must be in Him alone.

Soon as the physical storm has passed, a spiritual storm may come, which one may have to weather it much longer.

It won’t be over until God say that it is. During this time we must praise, pray, and persevere.

Because God created us, He truly knows what’s best for us. He knows how to protect our souls and keep us from danger.

However, this requires that we go to Him when we need help. We cannot rest in His presence if we do not spend time in His presence. He is a refuge to those who actively trust Him and seek His help. Regardless of what difficulty you’re experiencing, God is able to help you through it.

The best way to seek God’s help is through prayer. Spend some time talking with God, telling Him exactly how you feel. Ask Him for the things you need. As you seek His presence and trust in Him, He will protect you and keep you safe.

Time To Celebrate You

Time is never wasted that’s what I believe
I’m fine and alive so I might as well breath
I need a one way ticket to paradise
I never look back, I wanna celebrate life.

Start your day with gratitude. Setting a positive ambiance early on can significantly affect your mood for the rest of the day.

We should be enjoying our life to the fullest as opposed to simply going through the movements.

Exactly how this celebration manifests itself is different for everyone and their life’s experiences.

Taking the time to be genuinely grateful for your life is celebrating yourself. It increases our confidence.

Many of us have limiting beliefs about ourselves in at least one area of our lives, which results in a decrease in confidence.

The more that you celebrate yourself, the more your confidence raises.

Why is self-worth so essential to happiness and our celebration of life? Because our views about ourselves not only affect how we feel; they also affect our thoughts and behaviors.

When we feel bad about ourselves, we unconsciously act in ways that end up confirming our beliefs.

Celebrating yourself is one of the best things you can do. It’s a great way to boost your mood and to recharge after a long day.

So don’t think twice about it, do whatever makes you happy. You deserve it.

Mississippi Born: Robbie Montgomery

Robbie Montgomery (born June 16, 1940) in Columbus, Mississippi is an American singer and restaurateur.

She is noted for being one of the original Ikettes in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s.

After her tenure as an Ikette, she was a member of the Mirettes, and then became a “Night Tripper” for Dr. John.

In the 1970s, Montgomery was a backing vocalist for acts such as Stevie WonderBarbra Streisandthe Rolling Stones, and Joe Cocker.

She later created the Sweetie Pie’s franchise, and starred in the award-winning reality series Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s.

After Montgomery’s lung collapsed, which prevented her singing, she moved back to St. Louis from California and became a dialysis technician.

Eventually she took her mother’s soul food recipes, and created the soul food restaurant, Sweetie Pie’s, run by herself and her family. The first restaurant, in Dellwood, Missouri, opened in 1996. Montgomery hires men out of prison looking for jobs to work in her restaurant.

Welcome to Sweetie Pies, a reality show which focused on Montgomery running her soul food restaurants, premiered on OWN on October 15, 2011.

In 2015, Montgomery was featured in the book The People’s Place: Soul Food Restaurants and Reminiscences from the Civil Rights Era to Today. Montgomery told author Dave Hoekstra that managing her own restaurant gave her new appreciation for her former boss Ike Turner.

“Back then we all thought he was mean. You had to rehearse. He had his rules. You couldn’t have runs in your stockings. But now that I am running a business I know exactly where he was coming from.” Before Turner died in 2007, he visited Sweetie Pie’s and tipped Montgomery fifty-dollars.

In 2016, Montgomery sued her son Tim Norman for stealing money and violating her Sweetie Pie’s trademark to open competing restaurants, and, in 2017, Montgomery filed a motion to enforce a settlement agreement.

In January 2020, Sweetie Pie’s opened a new location in Jackson, Mississippi. Montgomery and Bobby Rush performed at the grand opening.

Delta Dawn

On this date in 1972, TANYA TUCKER released the single DELTA DAWN (Jun 15, 1972)

Country music legend Tanya Tucker engraved her name in the country music history books when she was just 13 years old with the single “Delta Dawn” in 1972.

The was written by the country performers Alexander Harvey and Larry Collins in 1972. Tracy Nelson (who sang backup on the original) and Bette Midler put the song in their live repertoire before it became a country hit for Tanya Tucker.

In the book Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music, Harvey says the tune is really about his mother, a heavy drinker who died in an apparent suicide by crashing into a tree when the songwriter was a teen. Harvey had just returned from a TV gig with his band; he had asked his mother not to go, worried she would embarrass him by drinking too much and making a spectacle. The guilt over his mother’s death stuck with him for years. A decade later, he was hanging out at Larry Collins’ house with a group of country musicians. Everyone fell asleep except for Harvey, who stayed up strumming his guitar. That’s when he saw his mother.

“I looked up and I felt as if my mother was in the room. I saw her very clearly. She was in a rocking chair and she was laughing,” he recalled. “My mother had come from the Mississippi Delta and she always lived her life as if she had a suitcase in her hand but nowhere to put it down. She was a hairdresser in Brownsville. She was very free-spirited, and folks in a small town don’t always understand people like that. She never really grew up.”

After coming up with the line, “She’s 41 and her daddy still calls her ‘baby.’ All the folks ’round Brownsville say she’s crazy,” he woke up Collins and the pair finished the song within 20 minutes.

Tanya Tucker, who was only 13 years old when she recorded her throaty rendition, proved she could handle mature subject matter at a young age. Her producer, Billy Sherrill, heard Bette Midler sing it on The Tonight Show and thought it would be ideal for Epic’s latest acquisition.

“He played me the demo of Alex Harvey, who wrote the song, playing guitar and singing ‘Delta Dawn,'” said Tucker recalling when Sherrill brought her the song.

This earned Tucker her first Grammy nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. She lost to Donna Fargo for “The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA,” the song Sherrill originally wanted her to record before “Delta Dawn” caught his attention.

True Friendship

True friendship may be defined as mutual unconditional love. This can be a different type of love than you might receive from your family or your partner or friends.

True friends may show unconditional love and expect nothing in return. They may not judge you or think less of you.

Some friends come into our lives because of proximity: you work at the same business, your kids go to the same school, or you frequent the same places.

But just because you know someone’s name and follow each other on social media, doesn’t mean you’re true friends.

True friends are the ones you can count on no matter what. The ones who go into the forest to find you and bring you home. And true friends never have to tell you that they’re your friends.

Our Absolute Best Rampage For Amazing Manifestations

The concept of manifestation has been around a while, but it has become much more popular in recent years. Social media has been buzzing with different takes on manifesting everything you want and more.

While the Bible doesn’t specifically talk about manifestation, the Lord does remind us in the Bible repeatedly that He is in control, and we are not. When we try to control our own lives, we lose sight of God’s sovereignty, His trustworthiness, the perfection in His plan, and the abundant life He offers.

God doesn’t mention “manifestation,” but He does command Christians to pray and bring our requests to Him (Philippians 4:6-7).

“He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.” (Daniel 2:21-22)

As much as we desire to control our lives, God is the One in control. He is in control of every circumstance and outcome. When we recall this, we are aware of the power God has over us and we are humbly reminded that any good that comes to our lives is through God not our actions or thoughts.

We can be free to rest in the truth that God is powerful, loving, good, and perfect despite any of our attempts to call the shots or “manifest” what we think is best.

3 Types of People in Your Life

LEAF PEOPLE:
These are people who come into your life just for a season. You can’t depend on them because they are weak. They only come to take what they want, but if the wind comes they will leave.
You need to be careful of these people because they love you when things are okay, but when the wind comes they will leave you 🥺

BRANCH PEOPLE:
They are strong, but you need to be careful with them too. They break away when life becomes tough and they can’t handle too much weight. They may stay with you in some seasons, but they will go when it becomes harder 😢

ROOT PEOPLE: These people are very important because they don’t do things to be seen. They are supportive even if you go through a difficult time they will water you and they are not moved by your position they just love you like that …

It’s not all people you meet or are your friends, that will stay with you.
Only the root type of people will stay no matter the season 👏☺️

Mississippi Food: Burger Chef

Who remembers the fast food chain Burger Chef? Burger Chef were once part of a national fast food chain.

There three different locations all in the southern part of the state. In addition to Laurel, there were locations in Gulfport and Biloxi. While Burger Chef was started in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1954, the Gulfport Burger Chef was the first to open of the three, announcing $0.15 hamburgers in 1962.  Laurel’s location opened in 1963 and Biloxi opened in 1964. Unfortunately, the Biloxi location right at the intersection of Porter Avenue and Judge Sekul Drive was demolished a while back.

Per the Wikipedia entry for Burger Chef, the chain had 1050 locations nationally and in Canada at its peak. There were  Burger Chef locations in Hattiesburg (at the intersection of Hardy and Highway 49), Greenville (1939 East Highway 82) and one in Vicksburg (on Clay Street near Baldwin Ferry Road). However, all these locations have been demolished.  Surely there was one in Jackson, perhaps other places across Mississippi. Do you remember eating at a Burger Chef?

In 1954, Frank and Donald Thomas patented the flame broiler. To showcase the flame broiler and their other restaurant equipment, they opened the first Burger Chef in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1957.

Burger Chef opened with a conveyor broiler that was said to be able to make 800 flame-broiled patties with ‘cook out flavor’ per hour, as well as being equipped with equally prolific automated milkshake blending machines.

Burger Chef spread across the United States, following a strategy of opening outlets in smaller towns.

In 1968, General Foods Corporation purchased the chain and continued its rapid expansion. At the time of the purchase by General Foods, Burger Chef had 600 locations in 39 states.

By 1972, its number of locations (1,200) was surpassed only by McDonald’s (1,600). They offered a double burger, called the Big Shef, and later the quarter-pound hamburger, Super Shef. Subsequently, they added the Works Bar, where customers added their own toppings to hamburgers.

The chain had two mascots: Burger Chef and Jeff (the chef’s juvenile sidekick). In the early 1970s, the chain introduced the Funburger and the Funmeal, with packaging that included stories about Burger Chef and Jeff’s adventures and friends (including the magician Burgerini, vampire Count Fangburger, talking ape Burgerilla, and Cackleburger the witch), with riddles, puzzles, and small toys. When McDonald’s introduced their Happy Meal in 1979, the chain sued, but ultimately lost.

In 1982, General Foods sold Burger Chef to the Canadian company Imasco, which also owned Hardee’s, for $44 million . Imasco converted many locations to Hardee’s restaurants and let franchises and locations near existing Hardee’s locations convert to other brands. Remaining restaurants that did not convert to Hardee’s or new names and branding simply closed.

I Won’t Complain

The Bible shows us very clearly that God is good and ultimately does not want people to suffer but that suffering is nevertheless a reality in this life.

He wants blessings for us–not blessings like material things, which can fade away, but heavenly blessings that will last forever.

So if suffering is part of our reality right now, hopefully we will find fresh hope as we see God’s plan to end suffering once and for all.

Blessings like being a good friend, being humble and sweet, being kind, loving, compassionate, and caring.

Those kind of blessings we can’t buy in a store. We have to become them. And we don’t become those things without God–God gives them to us through difficult times, through bad days, hard weeks, tough years.

“All discipline at the moment seems painful rather than pleasant. But later, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11.

How will we endure our next bad moment, or our next bad day? Will we remember that we can learn from it?

That God can teach us a lesson about Him, or ourselves? That God is loving us, even though it feels like we’re all alone?

Remember those things, and see how good the Lord our God is.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure to the feet, hands, and ears. It’s based on a theory that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems. People who practice this technique are called reflexologists.

Reflexologists believe that applying pressure to these parts offers a range of health benefits.

Why do we rub essential oils onto the soles of our feet? Here’s 5 reasons why:

  1. Oils deliver faster through the bottom of your feet!
  2. The pores are thicker on the sole of the foot and our legs act like straws sucking up the compounds quickly into the bloodstream. If applied all over the bottom of the foot, the oil can be detected in every cell of the body within 20 minutes!
  3. The soles of the feet and the palms of the hand are the only sites on our body without Sebaceous Glands.
  4. Since Sebum is an oily substance it would actually further “shield” the body from absorption of anything. Since the palms and the soles do not secrete sebum, they are more ready to absorb oil.
  5. Every nerve line in the body ends in the feet. According to research, each foot has 7,200 nerve endings. Did you know that?

In most reflexology systems, the big toe represents the brain and head. The next two toes represent the eyes, and the next two toes represent the ears. The top third of the sole is our chest, the mid third is our stomach and digestive system… it can get very intricate, but is SO cool. No wonder we apply oils to our feet- our feet represent our entire body!

Step Up

One day a farmer’s donkey fell into a well. The animal cried loudly for hours, while the farmer tried to find something to do to get him out.

Finally, the farmer decided that the donkey was old and the well was already dry and needed to be covered anyway; that it really wasn’t worth pulling the donkey out of the well..

He invited all his neighbors to come help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to throw dirt into the well.

The donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly loud. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he quieted down after a few shovelfuls of dirt.

The farmer finally looked down into the well and was amazed at what he saw… with each shovelful of dirt, the donkey was doing something incredible: It was shaking off the dirt and stepping on top of the dirt.

Very soon everyone saw surprised how the donkey reached the mouth of the well, went over the edge and trotted out…

Life is going to throw dirt at you, all kinds of dirt… the trick to getting out of the hole is to shake it off and use it to step up. Each of our problems is a step up. We can get out of the deepest holes if we don’t give up…

Use the land they throw you to get ahead!!!

Remember the 5 rules to be happy:

  1. Free your heart from hate.
  2. Free your Mind of distractions.
  3. Simplify your life.
  4. Give more and expect less.
  5. Love more and… shake the dirt, because in this life you have to be a solution, not the problem!

Don’t Argue With Donkeys

The donkey said to the tiger:

  • “The grass is blue”.

The tiger replied:

  • “No, the grass is green.”

The discussion heated up, and the two decided to submit him to arbitration, and for this they went before the lion, the King of the Jungle.

Already before reaching the forest clearing, where the lion was sitting on his throne, the donkey began to shout:

  • “His Highness, is it true that the grass is blue?”
  • “True, the grass is blue.”

The lion replied:

The donkey hurried and continued:

  • “The tiger disagrees with me and contradicts and annoys me, please punish him.”

The king then declared:

  • “The tiger will be punished with 5 years of silence.”

The donkey jumped cheerfully and went on his way, content and repeating:

  • “The Grass Is Blue”…

The tiger accepted his punishment, but before he asked the lion:

  • “Your Majesty, why have you punished me?, after all, the grass is green.”

The lion replied:

  • “In fact, the grass is green.”

The tiger asked:

  • “So why are you punishing me?”.

The lion replied:

  • “That has nothing to do with the question of whether the grass is blue or green.

The punishment is because it is not possible for a brave and intelligent creature like you to waste time arguing with a donkey, and on top of that come and bother me with that question.”

The worst waste of time is arguing with the fool and fanatic who does not care about truth or reality, but only the victory of his beliefs and illusions. Never waste time on arguments that don’t make sense…

There are people who, no matter how much evidence and evidence we present to them, are not in the capacity to understand, and others are blinded by ego, hatred and resentment, and all they want is to be right even if they are not.

When ignorance screams, intelligence is silent. Your peace and quiet are worth more. 🤎

Praying Honestly

Are you honest with God when you pray? Lots of people struggle with being completely honest with Him. Instead, they pick and choose the things they pray about. They hide certain sins and confess others that aren’t as embarrassing.

But Scripture says that we don’t need to clean up our life before we come to God. God is the one who created us, and He knows everything about us. So there is nothing that we can hide from Him. He already knows the innermost parts of our thoughts and desires.

So take a moment today to make Psalm 139 your prayer. Ask God to search your heart and see if there is anything hiding that you’re unaware of. When He brings something up, take it to Him and ask for forgiveness. Ask for the power of His Spirit to lead and guide you through this time.

God is faithful and merciful to continue to love us in spite of our shortcomings. He will continue to walk with you and lead you into eternal life with Him.

Taco Ring

INGREDIENTS
1 lb lean ground beef
1 (1 1/4 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (4 ounces)
2 tablespoons water
2 (8 ounce) packages refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
1 medium bell pepper
1 cup salsa
3 cups lettuce, shredded
1 medium tomatoes
1⁄4 cup onion, chopped (optional)
1⁄2 cup pitted ripe black olives (optional)
sour cream (optional)

DIRECTIONS Cook ground beef in large skillet over medium heat 7-9 minutes or until beef is no longer pink; drain.
Remove pan from heat.
Stir in taco seasoning mix, cheese and water.
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Unroll crescent dough; separate into triangles.
Arrange triangles in a circle on Classic Round Pizza Stone with wide ends overlapping in center and points toward outside. (There should be a 5 inch diameter opening in center.) I use my Pampered Chef pizza stone, but any flat round pan should work–perhaps even a pizza sheet, but I’d spray it with Pam before adding the crescent rolls.
Scoop meat mixture evenly onto widest end of each triangles up over filling and tuck under wide ends of dough at center of ring. (Filling will not be completely covered).
Bake at 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Shred lettuce and chop tomato, onion, olives, and bell pepper (if desired).
If you want to do something fancy, scoop out a bell pepper and fill with salsa and put into center of ring.
Add your toppings to top of ring and finish with more shredded cheese and sour cream.
This is great with a salad.

Be Observant

Observe people patterns; words means nothing because people can lie as easily as they breathe, actions can also be deceiving if they know they are being watched.

It’s heartbreaking when you realize how people really feel about you, but it gets better once you absorb the truth. 💯👀 #StayWoke

Observant people are more comfortable with information that is “right here,” and they process it in “what is” terms.

They prefer to deal with things as they are and in the present.

That doesn’t mean that they ignore the past or the future, but mostly they view things through the lens of now.
